In a remarkable display of community spirit and innovation, the Umuogbo-Agu community in Enugu-Ezike has decided to challenge neighboring communities in Enugu State. Known for their openness to new ways of community building, the people of Umuogbo-Agu have always celebrated their greatness and ingenuity.
Youth Inclusion in Governance
Continuing their tradition of embracing innovation, Umuogbo-Agu recently achieved a significant milestone by including youth representatives in its traditional peace committee. This marks a shift from the past exclusion of young people, who were once seen as inexperienced. Inspired by Finian Ali after attending the “Exploring Youth Experiences in Civic Space” forum, this change recognizes the potential of youth in community affairs and promotes a more inclusive and collaborative governance approach.
Agricultural Initiative: A New Milestone
In addition to their strides in governance, Umuogbo-Agu is celebrated for its agricultural initiatives aimed at promoting production and improving the land. This youth-led project, embraced by Umuogbo-Agu and other Enugu-Ezike communities, seeks to combat food insecurity and alleviate poverty. The initiative, moving from Uda through Ikpamodo, Umuogbo-Agu, and Ugbaike, has gained significant momentum and is considered one of the greatest initiatives in the local government.
The initiative received enthusiastic support from the Umuogbo-Agu community, with men and women receiving land from community members who recognized the significance of agriculture in community development. They promptly commenced land clearance and planting of their pepper crops. In addition to what they were planning to do this year, the men have already made it clear that come next year, they will put into practice all the knowledge they have gathered so far.
Their desire to embark on other agricultural practices could be traced back to the effort of our field officer, Mrs. Regina Ezeh. During a farming information session, she organized, all the participants, regardless of age and sex, showed their determination to embrace the project with all their hearts. Their pepper farm thrives, symbolizing their commitment to agricultural revival and community excellence.
